UX Process – How We Design Muncak App to Let Inner Adventure Souls Out

Muncak, literally means Hiking in Bahasa. Muncak is a platform that helps adventurous souls to get safer hiking experience. As hiking is known also as part of tourism experience, number of known hikers in Indonesia has grown throughout the years, means that the number of beginners are also increasing. The hiking ecosystem also meet it’s growth as the hikers also put events in certain dates as a mark of milestone, for example is a flag-waving events at indonesian mountains during independence day each year.

We may not yet be able to predict or control the natural aspects on the mountain, but we as a human can respect the natural law and prepare umbrellas for the heavy rain. Hiking does need proper preparations, educations, and of course, right communities.

I cover my creative process within three main phases, starting from pre-production, production, then post-production phase.

Pre-Production Process

For more than a year within this team, In this phase, our goal is to make sure that we understand the brand and the product, starting with understanding the goals, identifying the user and the people who they want to help, analyzing the industry and the competitor, so we could help for further development of the brand or the product.

As a product designer, we need to understand that usable product is not enough. This is why we have our core values to build digital products. We accomodate the need of the user, the goals, and the brand.

Put it in short, Muncak really want to help the people who has the inner adventure inside but has no clue on where to properly begin hiking or people who has less experience and would like to improve their hiking experience. Muncak really want to bring people who loves hiking come together in a community. A Platform.

The User

Production Phase

Muncak wants to create a community inside an app which let people plan, interact, and plan, and prepare their next hiking event. During the production phase, we create the app’s flowchart, the low-fidelity screens, and high fidelity screens.

Pardon the messy handwriting. Before we jump to the low-fidelity design process, I advice that we use our hands to just write and draw the wireframes, even the app flow as it is very important for the user journey within the app. (Yes i did use iPad Pro for this one :p) But hey, do not let technology become a creative constraints here. The purpose is to think as wild as you can so you’ll have as many working alternatives as we could.

There are considerations within the team on why we needed to go with material design theme at that point. That is why we, as a designer, need to be able to provide more than one solutions to go with. While excecutions may vary, the creative process and the core value must remain.

After the production stage, we go to post-production phase. In post-production phase, we evaluate and get user validation and feedbacks. We gather the user’s or non user’s feedbacks. That’s where user persona comes in. This is where we need people within the profile to validate and test the product prototype.

Overall, I’m happy that this platform comes to live, because most of the people are even too afraid to try something so risky-yet-so fun. Muncak comes as a starting point for people who wants to try a safer hiking and outdoor events experience.

As you may notice, the app does not only contain hiking activities. Because along the way, we evaluate that hiking is not the only thing our user want. They would like the app to be able to accomodate another outdoor activities such as surfing, caving, diving, etc. This is one of the importance of reevaluating as a part of startup growth.

As the product continues to develop new features in this fast-changing digital industry, for now I only cover this version of the app, and would be updated in the future. Startup is a world, that requires more than just collaboration, but also integration-within every aspects, within technology, designs, marketing, business, you name it. As digital product designer, we need to be as integrative as well, we need to understand the values between the user, the goals, and the brand itself.
